History and Origin of the Birman

Because the Birman is a relatively obscure cat breed, not much is known about its history. There aren’t many records about it and its origins. However, many claim that these kitties were companion animals of temple priests in Mount Lugh, Burma (present-day Myanmar). That’s how the breed earned the moniker “the Sacred Cat of Burma.”

Despite the lack of evidence regarding the cat’s origins, however, it’s widely accepted that the cat existed in France in the early 1900s. The Second World War nearly wiped out this breed, but two survivors named Orloff and Xenia de Kaabaa survived and carried on the lineage.

Their kittens were crossed with other breeds, such as Persians and Siamese cats, reviving the line of Birman cats we have today.

Notable Physical Characteristics of the Birman

The Birman cat is a medium-sized cat with a broad face, full cheeks, and a nose that curves outward. Its body is long, rectangular, and stocky. All Birman cats also have deep blue eyes and long, silky fur.

Birman cats are color-pointed cats like the Siamese, meaning they have light-colored bodies with darker spots on the face, ears, tail, and legs. However, they have four white paws, giving the appearance of “gloves” and “laces.”

Like other color-point cats, Birman kittens are born white. They develop their color points when they are one to two weeks old. Their coats can continue to change until they are about two years old.

Behavior, Temperament, and What to Expect

The Birman is a friendly and affectionate cat breed. It can get along well with people and other animals—even cat-friendly dogs. They’re sweet and patient, so they can also bond with kids that treat them gently and respectfully.

Birman cats are also curious creatures that love investigating objects. They’re seemingly always ready to play and climb. They may also follow their pet parents around the home!

Birmans may look high-maintenance because of their long fur coats, but this isn’t usually the case. They only have single coats, so their fur doesn’t mat as easily as double-coated cat breeds.

Despite the small gene pool of Birmans, many consider them a healthy cat breed with no breed-specific diseases. However, it’s still advisable to take your kitty to the vet at least once a year for physical check-ups.

The Takeaway

Birmans are adorable cats with long, silky fur and a color-point pattern. Their gloves and laces make them look unique, and their blue eyes are hard to resist. They’re also playful and curious, so they can bring life to any responsible pet parent’s home!
