Bulldogs originally were bred for cruel sports like bull-baiting, but after these activities were outlawed in the early 1800s, the UK began breeding them for other purposes. Then, miniature Bulldogs began to appear by the middle of this century.

When English lace workers began settling in Normandy, France due to the Industrial Revolution, they brought various dogs with them, including these miniature Bulldogs whose ears stood up. The breeders sold them to the French community, and they became highly popular companions.

These distinct-looking Bulldogs were then considered a breed separate from their English Bulldog ancestors and were called Bouledogue Francais—the original name of the French Bulldog.

The breed then became highly sought after by high society. Artists, fashion designers, and writers especially loved French Bulldogs. Even some influential families, such as the Rockefellers and the J. P. Morgans, kept these lovely dogs.

Frenchies are small dogs with stocky, muscular bodies that typically weigh around 20 to 28 pounds. They have long, bat-like ears, short snouts, and stubby tails. They also usually have dark-colored eyes, to the point of appearing black.

These dogs vary widely in the color of their coats—you can find fawn, brindle, pied, cream-colored, black, and white French Bulldogs. Their fur is short and doesn’t require much grooming, which is ideal for many families because they’re typically low-maintenance pets.

Behavior, Temperament, and What to Expect

French Bulldogs are great companion pets because they’re generally mild-mannered, loving, and affectionate. They can live easily with other dog breeds, as they’re rather patient pups. Their intelligence makes them easy to train with consistent rewards and praise, but they may sometimes be a little stubborn.

Frenchies require exercise like any other dog, but they’re generally not as energetic as Poodles and Jack Russells. Because of this, they can thrive in most homes. However, it’s vital to note that these dogs are prone to separation anxiety—it’ll easily get stressed if you leave it alone for more than a couple of hours!

If you’re looking for an affectionate dog that craves attention, then you may want to consider having a French Bulldog in your life.

The Takeaway

French Bulldogs are gentle and patient dogs with lots of love to give—and their cute appearance can captivate anyone! They’re amazing companions to keep in your home if you can care for them well.
